Quick answer
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by total credits. Use the calculator below for a 4.0 or 10-point (CGPA) result in seconds.

The GPA formula
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a credit-weighted average of your grades. Each grade maps to a number of grade points; each course is worth a number of credit hours.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ (credit hours)
Because it is weighted by credits, a high grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
Common grade scales
| Letter grade | 4.0 scale | 10-point |
|---|---|---|
| A / A+ / O | 4.0 | 10 |
| A− | 3.7 | 9 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 8 |
| B | 3.0 | 7 |
| C | 2.0 | 5 |
| F | 0.0 | 0 |
Grade-point mappings vary between institutions — the chart above shows typical values. Always confirm your school's official scale.
GPA vs CGPA
GPA usually describes one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the running average across every semester you have completed. The formula is identical — CGPA simply includes all your courses to date.
To convert a percentage to CGPA on the 10-point scale, a widely used approximation is CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5.
What counts as a good GPA?
- 4.0 scale: 3.5+ is strong, 3.0 is solid, below 2.0 is usually a warning zone.
- 10-point scale: 8.5+ is excellent, 7.5+ is good.
- Context matters — scholarships, honours and some employers set their own thresholds.
Key takeaways
- GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple mean of grades.
- Bigger courses (more credits) affect your GPA more.
- CGPA is the cumulative version of GPA across all terms.
- Check your institution's official grade-point chart for exact values.
