Attendance Calculator

Quick answer

To calculate your attendance percentage, divide classes attended by total classes held and multiply by 100. Example: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. Most colleges require a minimum of 75%. Use the calculator below to get your exact figure instantly.

The attendance percentage formula

Attendance percentage is a simple ratio expressed out of 100:

calculate

Attendance % = (Classes attended ÷ Total classes held) × 100

The only rule that trips students up is what counts as a "class held." A lecture that was cancelled by the institution never happened, so it should not be included in the total. Counting cancelled classes drags your percentage down unfairly.

Worked example

Say you have attended 42 classes this semester and 50 classes were actually held:

  • Attended: 42
  • Held: 50
  • Calculation: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%

At 84% you are comfortably above the common 75% threshold. If instead you had attended 34 of 50, you would be at 68% — below target and at risk of being barred from exams.

The 75% attendance rule explained

Most universities and colleges set a minimum attendance requirement of 75% to be eligible to sit end-of-term exams. Some professional programs demand 80% or even 85%. The requirement exists to make sure students engage with enough teaching to pass.

This calculator is a personal aid. Your college's official attendance record is always the source of truth — check it regularly.

How to improve (and protect) your attendance

  • Track every class as it happens. Marking present, absent or cancelled the moment class ends keeps your percentage accurate.
  • Know your buffer. A bunk calculator tells you how many classes you can miss before dropping below target.
  • Prioritise low-attendance subjects. Recover the subjects closest to the line first.
  • Set reminders. Most misses are accidental — a nudge before each class prevents them.

Key takeaways

  • Attendance % = attended ÷ held × 100.
  • Never count cancelled classes in the total.
  • Aim to stay above your institution's minimum — usually 75%.
  • To plan skips safely, use a bunk calculator that factors in remaining classes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?
Divide the number of classes you attended by the total number of classes held, then multiply by 100. For example, 42 attended out of 50 held is (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.
What is the minimum attendance percentage in most colleges?
Most colleges require at least 75% attendance to sit exams, though some ask for 80% or 85%. Always check your institution's official rule.
Do cancelled classes count against my attendance?
No. A class cancelled by the institution was never held, so it should not be counted in the total. Only count classes that actually took place.
How many classes can I miss and still keep 75%?
It depends on how many classes remain in the term. Use our bunk calculator, which factors in your target and remaining classes to tell you exactly how many you can skip.
