Final Grade Calculator

Quick answer

To find out what you need on your final exam: Required final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, with the weight as a decimal. Example: you have 82%, want 85%, and the final is worth 30% → you need 91.7% on the final. Use the calculator below — it updates as you type and tells you if your target is already secured or out of reach.

Calculate the grade you need on your final

Enter your current grade, the grade you're aiming for, and how much the final exam is worth. The result updates instantly.

The final grade formula

Your overall grade is a weighted average of the work you've already done and your final exam. Rearranging that to solve for the final gives:

calculate

Required final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Here Weight is the final's share of the grade written as a decimal (30% → 0.30), and Current is your grade going into the final (the average of everything else).

Worked example

Say you currently have 82%, you want to finish on 85%, and the final is worth 30% of the course:

  • Weight as a decimal: 30% → 0.30
  • Calculation: (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 27.6 ÷ 0.30
  • Required final score: 92% (91.7% rounded)

That's a demanding target — useful to know now, while there's still time to prepare, rather than after the exam.

How exam weighting works

The bigger the final's weight, the more it can move your grade — in both directions. A 10%-weighted final can barely shift your result, while a 50%-weighted final can rescue or sink a semester. Knowing the weight tells you how much effort the final deserves relative to your other assessments.

If the required score is comfortably low, you can allocate more study time to other subjects. If it's high, prioritise this final and start early with focused, active-recall study sessions.

When your target is out of reach (or already won)

  • Over 100% needed: the target isn't achievable with the final alone. Aim for your best score and ask about extra credit or make-up work.
  • 0% or below needed: your existing marks already secure the target — even a blank final keeps you there. Great position to be in.
  • A realistic number: treat it as your study target and build a plan around it.

Key takeaways

  • Required final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight.
  • Convert the final's weight to a decimal before using the formula.
  • Over 100% means the target isn't reachable with the final alone.
  • Knowing the number early lets you plan your study time where it counts.

Plan the study time to hit that score

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Use the formula: Required final score = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight, where the weight is written as a decimal. For example, if you have 82%, want 85%, and the final is worth 30%, you need (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 91.7% on the final. The calculator on this page does it instantly.
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Set your target grade to the passing mark (often 40% or 50%) and enter your current grade and the final's weight. The calculator returns the exact score you need on the final to reach that pass mark.
What does the final exam weight mean?
The weight is the share of your overall grade that the final exam is worth. If the final counts for 30% of your grade, its weight is 30%, and the remaining 70% comes from work you've already completed.
What if I need more than 100% on my final?
If the calculator says you need more than 100%, your target isn't reachable with the final alone. Aim for your best possible score and speak to your professor about extra credit, resubmissions or make-up options.
Can I pass even with a 0 on the final?
If the calculator shows a required score of 0% or below, your existing marks already secure your target grade — a 0 on the final would still keep you at or above it. Anything you score is a bonus.
